Introduction to Our Educational Programme
Whilst your children are with us at the nursery they will participate in an excellent Educational Programme designed to provide a reliable platform for them to build upon at school.Children from the age of 6 weeks the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Every child deserves the best possible start in life and support to fulfill their potential. A child's experience in the early years has a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right, and it provides the foundation for children to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up. The aim of of the EYFS is to help young children achieve the five Every Child Matters outcomes of staying safe, being healthy, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution an achieving economic well being.
The EYFS principles are grouped into 4 themes :-
A Unique Child - recognises that every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self assured.
Positive Relationships - describes how children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents / or a key person.
Enabling Environments - explains that the environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children's development and learning.
Learning & Development - recognises that children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates, and that all areas of learning and develeopment are equally important and inter-connected.
At the nursery we acknowledge that parents and families are central to the well-being of the child and that relationships with other people (both adults and children) are of crucial importance in s child’s life. Learning is a shared process and children learn most effectively when, with support of a knowledgeable and trusted adult, they are actively involved and interested.
We believe that schedules and routines must flow with the childrens needs and children learn when they are given appropriate responsibility, allowed to make errors, decisions and choices, and respected as autonomous and competent learners. We believe children learn by doing rather than being told and therefore we strive in providing a wide range of learning opportunities both indoors and out for all our children whatever their age wgilst they are in nursery with us.
At The East Dereham Day Nursery children from the ages of three years to five years follow the Foundation Stage curriculum and from September 2009 this will be under the guidance of a qualified teacher. The Foundation Stage underpins all future learning by supporting, fostering, promoting and developing children’s:
PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING. In particular by supporting the transition to and between Settings, promoting an inclusive ethos and providing opportunities for each child to become a valued member of that group and community so that a strong self-image and self-esteem are promoted
POSITIVE ATTITUDES AND DISPOSITIONS TOWARDS THEIR LEARNING
In particular an enthusiasm for knowledge and learning and confidence in their ability to be successful learners
SOCIAL SKILLS In particular by providing opportunities that enable them to learn how to co-operate and work harmoniously alongside and with each other and listen to each other.
ATTENTION SKILLS AND PERSISTENCE
In particular the capacity to concentrate on their own play or on group tasks
LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION With opportunities for all children to talk and communicate in a widening range of situations, to respond to adults and to each other, to practise and extend the range of vocabulary and communication skills they use to listen carefully.
READING AND WRITING With opportunities of all children to explore, enjoy, learn about and use words and text in a broad range of contexts and to experience a rich variety of books
MATHEMATICS With opportunities for all children to develop their understanding of number, measurement, pattern, shape and space by providing a broad range of contexts in which they can explore, enjoy, learn, practice and talk about them.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD With opportunities for all children to solve problems, make decisions, experiment, predict, plan and question in a variety of contexts, and to explore and find out about their environment and people and places that have significance in their lives
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT With opportunities for all children to develop and practice their fine gross motor skills and to increase their understanding of how their bodies work and what they need to do to be healthy and safe.
CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT With opportunities for all children to explore and share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of art, design and technology, music, movement, dance and imaginative and role play activities.
The curriculum identifies stepping stones of progress towards the early learning goals. These stepping stones identify developing knowledge, skills, understanding and attitudes that children need if they are to achieve the early learning goals before the end of the foundation stage.
Upon leaving the Rainbow nursery to start school, all children are given a comprehensive report regarding their development. Their foundation stage profile is incorporated into our report and a copy is given with the parents permission, to your childs chosen school. Once in Rainbow the children will have a registration time at the beginning of each session and key worker group time during every session. These special activities are designed to introduce the children to the type of activities that they will be experiencing when they start their reception class at school.
Finally, we should not forget that children are only children for such a short time and we should let them be children, have fun and allow them to learn and discover through play!
